How not to look at the eclipse
There's going to be a solar eclipse soon, and it's expected to be the most dangerous solar eclipse the US has seen in living memory. Largely because the path of totality is within driving distance of some 200 million Americans, and traffic accidents spiked during the last few eclipses.
Moreover, it's going to be the most nearly total eclipse many of us will ever see. This will lead some people to feel like it's safe to look directly at the eclipse, because it's only a tiny sliver of the sun. But even this small amount of direct sunlight is enough to burn your retinas.
There are special eclipse glasses that will shield your eyes from the harmful rays while letting enough visible light through that you can see it. It's also important to make sure your eclipse glasses are legit and not fake.
